Australian Labor MP Ed Husic has spoken publicly about a serious car accident that left him hospitalized with fractures and a concussion, saying he feels “very lucky” to have survived the collision and has no memory of the crash itself.
Husic, the federal member for Chifley in western Sydney, was involved in the accident on the M7 motorway on August 4, 2026, while travelling home from his electorate office. His vehicle was involved in a collision with a truck and another car near Dean Park at about 6:20 p.m. He was treated by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital. (
The politician was discharged from hospital the following day after doctors treated him for abrasions, fractures and a concussion. His injuries required him to take a short period away from his parliamentary duties while he recovered.
In his first detailed public comments following the crash, Husic said he could remember nothing from around midday on the day of the accident until he regained consciousness in the emergency department. He said he has been attempting to reconstruct what happened using information such as photographs, messages and toll records.
Husic also revealed that he suffered a hairline fracture to one of his vertebrae in addition to the concussion. He described himself as fortunate to have survived the collision and expressed gratitude to the medical staff, paramedics and members of the public who assisted him.
The crash reportedly involved Husic’s vehicle being struck from behind by a truck. Dashcam footage of the collision has since been provided to police and released by Husic as investigators worked to establish the circumstances of the incident.
Despite continuing to experience pain during his recovery, Husic has gradually returned to work and said he hopes to resume his parliamentary duties when Parliament returns. He has also been advised to avoid contact sports, including parliamentary basketball, while he continues recovering from the concussion.
The accident has therefore not resulted in Husic’s death, despite some misleading references that may circulate online. The Chifley MP survived the crash and, as of September 1, 2026, is recovering and preparing to return fully to parliamentary work.
