Anne Heche, the acclaimed actress whose career spanned film, television and Broadway, died in August 2022 after suffering devastating injuries in a fiery car crash in Los Angeles. Heche was 53 when she died following the August 5, 2022 crash in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles. She was driving a Mini Cooper when the vehicle crashed into a home, triggering a major fire that engulfed both the car and part of the residence. Emergency crews eventually rescued her from the wreckage, and she was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Doctors determined that Heche had suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and extensive physical injuries. On August 11, she was declared legally dead. She remained on life support for a short period afterward so that her organs could be evaluated for donation, honoring her previously expressed wishes. She was taken off life support on August 14, 2022.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner ruled Heche’s death an accident. Her official cause of death was listed as inhalation and thermal injuries, while a sternal fracture caused by blunt trauma was identified as another significant contributing condition.
Later toxicology findings also clarified questions surrounding the crash. The coroner’s report found no evidence that Heche was impaired by illicit drugs at the time of the collision. Although an inactive cocaine metabolite and other substances were detected in testing, investigators concluded they did not establish impairment at the time of the crash.
Heche left behind two sons, Homer and Atlas, and a body of work that made her one of the recognizable performers of her generation. She won a Daytime Emmy for Another World and appeared in films including Donnie Brasco, Wag the Dog, Volcano and Six Days, Seven Nights. She also earned recognition for her work on television and stage.
Her death prompted an outpouring of grief from family, friends, fellow actors and fans. In the years since, Heche has continued to be remembered not only for the tragedy that ended her life but for her willingness to take on complex roles and speak openly about difficult periods in her personal life. Her posthumously published memoir, Call Me Anne, further contributed to the record of her life and career.
