The Temple Hills community is mourning the loss of Alexis Cummings, 33, whose life was tragically cut short following a serious multi-vehicle crash during a police pursuit in Prince George’s County.
Cummings was identified by the Maryland Office of the Attorney General on August 31, several days after the August 25 collision in Brandywine. She died from injuries sustained in the crash, leaving family members, friends and others who knew her grieving an unexpected loss.
According to investigators, the incident began when deputies with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle after receiving information from law enforcement authorities in Arlington, Virginia. The vehicle reportedly fled, leading to a pursuit that continued into Prince George’s County.
The pursuit came to an end on Route 301 in the Brandywine area when the fleeing vehicle collided with two other vehicles. Several people were injured in the crash, including Cummings, who was transported to a hospital for treatment. She later died from her injuries.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is investigating the police-involved collision. The two deputies involved were identified as PFC Eddie Vanover and Cpl. Justin Bottorf. Investigators have indicated that body-worn camera and dashboard camera footage is among the evidence being reviewed.
The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the pursuit, the collision and the actions of those involved. Authorities have not yet released a final determination regarding responsibility for the crash.
For Alexis’ family, however, the focus is now on remembering the woman behind the headlines. Those closest to her affectionately called her “Lex” and are mourning the loss of a beloved young woman whose life ended far too soon.
