Monongahela River Boat Crash: Boat Collision Leaves One Dead and Three Missing Near Rices Landing on Monongahela River

A major search and recovery operation is underway on the Monongahela River following a devastating boat collision that left one person dead and three others missing Sunday night, August 30, 2026, near Rices Landing, Pennsylvania.

According to officials, the collision occurred shortly before 9 p.m. when a 24-foot cabin cruiser carrying five adults collided with a commercial towboat pushing barges along the river. The force of the impact caused the recreational vessel to capsize, sending all five occupants into the water.

Crew members aboard the commercial vessel reportedly immediately began assisting those in the river while local emergency agencies were called to the scene. Rescue crews arrived as authorities launched a large-scale effort to locate and assist the victims.

Two people from the recreational boat were pulled from the water and airlifted to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. Authorities later confirmed that one of those victims had died. Three additional occupants remain unaccounted for as crews continue searching the river.

The search was temporarily suspended overnight because of darkness and safety concerns before resuming Monday morning. As the operation continued, authorities shifted portions of the mission from an active rescue effort toward recovery as hopes of finding the missing occupants alive diminished.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Greene County emergency services and local fire departments are among the agencies involved in the response. Crews have deployed boats, helicopters, drones and specialized search personnel as they work across the river and surrounding areas.

The collision has also prompted an investigation into how the two vessels came into contact. Investigators are expected to examine the positions and movements of both boats, witness accounts and other available evidence as they work to establish what led to the crash.

The identities of the deceased victim and those still missing have not been released publicly. Authorities are withholding the names while families are notified.

Officials have not said whether weather conditions, visibility, vessel speed, river traffic or another factor contributed to the collision. Those questions are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.

For families waiting for word about their loved ones, the continued search has been marked by uncertainty and anguish. The incident has also shaken the Rices Landing community, where residents have watched emergency crews work along the river in an effort to bring the operation to a conclusion.

Authorities are urging members of the public to stay away from the active search area and allow emergency personnel to work without interference. Search and recovery efforts remain active, and additional information is expected as investigators learn more about the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision.
