Mica Acacia Miller, a 30-year-old South Carolina woman remembered for her faith, creativity, warmth and commitment to helping others, continues to be mourned more than two years after her death on April 27, 2024.
Mica was born March 7, 1994, in Wichita, Kansas, and later made the Myrtle Beach area her home. Her official obituary described her as energetic, adventurous, faithful, loving, giving, creative, determined and hardworking. She was deeply involved in church life and served in ministry and worship-related roles at Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach.
Her life was marked by strong relationships with family, friends and members of her faith community. Those who knew her have remembered a woman with a vibrant personality and a desire to encourage and help the people around her. Her family has continued to emphasize the person Mica was beyond the circumstances that eventually brought her name into national headlines.
Mica’s death occurred at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina. Authorities ultimately determined that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and officially ruled her death a suicide. Investigators said the conclusion was based on evidence including surveillance footage, interviews, physical evidence and the findings of the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office.
The circumstances surrounding Mica’s final months, however, have continued to receive intense public attention. She had separated from her husband, South Carolina pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller, and had reported allegations of stalking and harassment before her death. She had also reported finding a tracking device on her vehicle and told police that she was afraid for her safety.
Mica’s death has remained the subject of public discussion in part because of the questions raised by people who knew her. Her family and friends have expressed suspicions about the circumstances surrounding her death, while the official ruling remains suicide. John-Paul Miller has denied involvement in her death and has not been charged with causing it.
The legal story surrounding her estranged husband has continued separately. In December 2025, federal prosecutors indicted Miller on allegations involving cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators. Those charges concern conduct surrounding Mica and her death but do not charge him with causing her death. His federal case is scheduled for trial in October 2026.
Mica’s story has also returned to national attention following the release of the Netflix documentary series Death of the Pastor’s Wife in August 2026. The three-part series examines her life, her marriage, the difficult period preceding her death and the continuing questions surrounding the case through interviews, family accounts and previously unseen material.
Yet for those who loved Mica, her legacy extends beyond the controversy surrounding her death. Her official obituary remembers her as a woman who was passionate, joyful, talented and deeply connected to the people around her. She is survived by family members, siblings, stepchildren and others who continue to carry her memory.
