Henry Herbert Greenwood, 77, of Portland, Oregon, has died following a major five-vehicle collision on Highway 26 in Clatsop County that left several other people injured.
The crash occurred Friday evening, August 28, 2026, near milepost 24. According to the Oregon State Police, Greenwood was driving a gray Honda Fit eastbound on Highway 26 at approximately 5:18 p.m. when his vehicle crossed into the westbound lanes for reasons that remain unknown.
The Honda sideswiped a westbound Tesla Model S before colliding head-on with a Toyota Tacoma pickup. The force of the collision triggered a chain reaction involving several other vehicles.
Investigators said an eastbound Volkswagen Golf attempted to avoid the Honda as it moved back toward its lane but was subsequently struck from behind by a Ford F-350 pickup.
Emergency crews from multiple surrounding agencies responded as the highway became blocked by the extensive wreckage. Greenwood suffered critical injuries and was transported by Life Flight to a Portland-area hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A passenger in Greenwood’s Honda was also airlifted with serious injuries. The driver of the Toyota Tacoma suffered serious injuries, while four passengers in the pickup sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Other people involved in the collision either suffered minor injuries or were not injured.
Highway 26 remained closed for approximately five hours while emergency personnel treated those involved and crews worked to remove the damaged vehicles. Oregon State Police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the scene as authorities began piecing together the events that led to the crash.
Several agencies assisted with the emergency response, including Medix Ambulance Service, Banks Fire District, Hamlet Rural Fire Protection District and Elsie Vinemaple Rural Fire Protection District.
Investigators have not determined why Greenwood’s vehicle crossed the centerline. No specific contributing factor has been publicly identified, and the investigation remains ongoing.
