Gio Bollettieri, the 21-year-old son of late International Tennis Hall of Fame coach Nick Bollettieri, has died unexpectedly, leaving his family, friends and members of the communities he touched mourning the loss of a young man remembered for his kindness, adventurous spirit and devotion to those around him.
Gio, whose full name was Giovanni Pietro Bollettieri, was born on December 10, 2004, in Asela, Ethiopia. He was adopted by Nick and Cindi Bollettieri in 2009, when he was five years old, and became part of a large and closely connected family. His younger brother, Giacomo, was also adopted from Ethiopia, and the two brothers developed an especially close relationship.
According to a memorial website established in his honor, Gio died unexpectedly on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Gainesville, Florida. He was 21. The family has not disclosed a specific cause of death, and no illness, accident or other circumstance should be assumed in the absence of an official statement.
Gio was remembered as someone who lived with an unusual sense of curiosity and adventure. His family said he became a certified scuba diver at age 10, began flying helicopters at 14 and went skydiving on several occasions. He also loved traveling and had visited numerous destinations in the United States and abroad, including Ethiopia, Italy, England, Scotland, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica and the Bahamas.
His interests extended well beyond travel. Gio participated in a wide range of sports, including lacrosse, rowing, swimming, baseball, golf, cycling, running and equestrian activities. He was part of the IMG Academy lacrosse program, where he was listed on the school’s roster.
His family said Gio was pursuing an undergraduate degree in biology and hoped to continue his education toward a career as a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant. Shortly before his death, he learned that he had completed the credits needed to transfer to the University of Florida to finish his bachelor’s degree. He had also spent time shadowing surgeons and anesthesiologists as he prepared for his future career.
Gio was also described as deeply compassionate and someone who found fulfillment in helping others. His family recalled that he was frequently the person relatives and friends called when they needed help fixing something, solving a technology problem or completing a project. He also operated a pressure-washing business and worked a variety of jobs while building his own interests and investments.
His relationship with his younger brother was one of the defining parts of his life. The family recalled that Gio prayed for a little brother for two years before Giacomo joined the family in 2011. From the moment they met, Gio became his brother’s protector, best friend and biggest supporter.
Nick Bollettieri, who died in 2022 at age 91, was one of the most influential tennis coaches of his generation and founded the academy that became IMG Academy. Gio grew up surrounded by that tennis legacy, but his family’s remembrance emphasizes that his own identity extended far beyond his famous father’s career.
The family memorial describes Gio as humble, empathetic, disciplined and generous, with a bright smile and infectious laugh. He was also recognized for leadership and integrity during his school years, including receiving an Integrity Award and a Leadership Award. His family said he was frequently chosen as captain by his friends and teammates and was selected by his peers for both Homecoming Court and Prom Court at IMG Academy.
Gio is survived by his mother, Cindi Bollettieri; his brother and best friend, Giacomo; his birth mother, Chifre Tadesse of Ethiopia; and numerous siblings, grandparents, extended relatives, godparents and friends. His father, Nick Bollettieri, and godfather John Hendrickson preceded him in death.
Two celebrations of life have been announced. A Vermont gathering is scheduled for September 18, 2026, at the United Church of Craftsbury in Craftsbury, Vermont. A second celebration is scheduled for November 28, 2026, at the Dr. Janet Pullen Center at St. Stephen Episcopal School in Bradenton, Florida.
At only 21, Gio Bollettieri leaves behind a life his family describes as brief but remarkably full of love, adventure, service and meaningful relationships.
