A U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Knox has died following an accident involving engineering equipment at the installation’s motor pool, military officials confirmed.
The incident occurred Tuesday while the soldier was working in the motor pool, a facility where Army units maintain and service vehicles, equipment and machinery. According to an Army spokesperson, engineering equipment fell onto the soldier during the work activity.
Emergency personnel were called to the scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. and provided assistance before the soldier was airlifted to UofL Hospital in Louisville for treatment. The soldier later died from injuries sustained in the incident.
“We are saddened by the death of one of our own as a result of this tragic event today,” Col. David T. Holstead, Fort Knox Garrison commander, said in a statement. “Our heart goes out to the Soldier’s family and friends as we collectively mourn the loss of one of our teammates.”
The Army has not released the soldier’s name. Officials said the identity is being withheld until the soldier’s next of kin have been notified.
Initial information indicates the incident was accidental, but the circumstances surrounding the equipment failure and the events leading to the soldier’s injuries remain under investigation. The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division is handling the investigation.
The involvement of the Criminal Investigation Division is part of the Army’s standard process when investigating the deaths of soldiers. Authorities are expected to examine the work area, equipment and circumstances surrounding the incident as they work to establish a complete account of what happened.
The death has prompted mourning among members of the Fort Knox community, where soldiers and civilian personnel work together across a wide range of military operations and support functions.
Until the investigation is completed, officials have not released additional details about the soldier’s unit, position, the type of engineering equipment involved or the precise circumstances of the accident.
