British motorcycle stuntman Eddie Kidd suffered a devastating accident on August 6, 1996, during a motorcycle stunt at the Bulldog Bash at Long Marston Airfield near Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. The crash brought an abrupt end to a remarkable career that had made Kidd one of Britain’s most celebrated daredevil performers.
Kidd was attempting a jump of roughly 15 metres across a drag strip. Although he successfully landed the motorcycle on both wheels, his chin struck the motorcycle’s petrol tank, knocking him unconscious. Unable to control the bike, he and the motorcycle continued toward and over a steep embankment, resulting in severe head and pelvic injuries.
The injuries were catastrophic. Kidd spent approximately three months in a coma and was left with brain damage and paralysis. Doctors initially warned his family that he could potentially remain in a coma for as long as 10 years, but he regained consciousness much sooner and began the long process of rehabilitation.
Before the accident, Kidd had established himself as a record-breaking motorcycle stunt performer. He began performing at just 14 and went on to complete thousands of jumps, including spectacular leaps over buses and cars. His work also took him into the film industry, where he served as a stunt double in productions including James Bond films and Hanover Street.
Despite the life-changing injuries, Kidd continued to demonstrate remarkable determination. In 2011, he completed the London Marathon after beginning the challenge in his wheelchair and walking sections with assistance, raising money for charity. He was also awarded an OBE in recognition of his charitable work.
Kidd’s story later received renewed attention when Top Gear presenter Paddy McGuinness dedicated a special tribute to the stunt legend. The 2021 programme highlighted Kidd’s career, his recovery and the lasting admiration he has earned from fellow motorcycle enthusiasts and performers.
The 1996 accident remains the defining turning point in Eddie Kidd’s life. Yet his story is remembered not simply for the crash itself, but for his determination to rebuild his life afterward.
