The Northwest Guilford Middle School community is mourning the death of 13-year-old Caden Sorrell, a student-athlete whose sudden medical emergency during football practice has left his family, teammates, classmates and friends devastated.
Caden died on Sunday, August 30, 2026, after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest during football practice at Northwest Guilford Middle School. His family said he was transported to Cone Hospital, where doctors and medical staff used intensive lifesaving measures, including a heart pump and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, commonly known as ECMO. Despite those efforts, his condition became too severe for doctors to save him.
According to his family, Caden had appeared to be healthy before the medical emergency. His older sister, Vanessa Clark, told WXII that he had begun practice normally, ran a lap around the football field and then went into cardiac arrest. She described her younger brother as someone who never knew a stranger and said he was known for making people around him feel loved.
Caden was a running back for the Northwest Guilford Middle School Vikings and wore No. 42. His family said he loved football and was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Beyond the field, relatives remembered him as brilliant, kind, sweet and full of life.
His death has also raised questions about what caused such a sudden medical crisis in a seemingly healthy young athlete. Caden’s family said doctors believe an underlying genetic condition may have contributed to his cardiac arrest, although an exact medical diagnosis has not been publicly confirmed. His four siblings, including his twin brother, are expected to undergo testing as the family seeks answers.
The loss has deeply affected Northwest Guilford Middle School. Principal CeCe Matson told the school community that there were no easy words to explain the loss of a child and urged students, families and staff to support one another with compassion. The school’s Parent Teacher Student Organization also established an outdoor memorial where members of the community can leave flowers, notes and other tributes in Caden’s memory.
Friends and family have rallied around the Sorrell family as they navigate the unimaginable loss. A fundraiser established to assist with funeral and memorial expenses is also helping cover medical testing for Caden’s siblings and other unexpected costs facing the family.
A community vigil is scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, at the Northwest Guilford High School football stadium. Family and community members are expected to gather to remember Caden and support those closest to him.
