Authorities in Attala County are investigating the deaths of Johnny Ray Reeves II, 38, and Nicole Massey, 39, after the pair were found deceased inside a home in the rural Zama community Sunday afternoon, August 30, 2026. The investigation has since led to the arrest of an 18-year-old relative as detectives work to determine what happened.
According to the Attala County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the residence at approximately 4:58 p.m. after a person arriving at the home discovered a man and woman unresponsive inside. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Attala County Coroner Sam Bell identified the deceased as Reeves and Massey. Their bodies were transported to the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory, where autopsies are expected to help determine the causes and manners of their deaths.
A major development came Monday, August 31, when authorities announced the arrest of Isaiah Reeves, 18, who is the nephew of Johnny Ray Reeves II. Sheriff Curtis Pope said the teenager voluntarily went to the Attala County Sheriff’s Office accompanied by an attorney before being taken into custody.
Isaiah Reeves has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Leake County Correctional Facility on a $2 million bond.
Investigators have not publicly disclosed a motive or provided detailed information about the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities have also not released the evidence supporting the charge, saying the investigation remains active.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Attala County Sheriff’s Office as investigators continue gathering evidence, interviewing individuals and working to establish a detailed timeline of events.
