The community is mourning the sudden death of 23-year-old Julia Christie, who was killed Saturday, August 29, 2026, in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. 150 at Lawrence Banet Road in Floyd County.
According to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were called to the crash shortly after 12:15 p.m. Investigators said Christie was driving a black 2008 Honda Accord and was attempting to turn left from southbound U.S. 150 onto Lawrence Banet Road when her vehicle was struck by a blue 2013 Ford Focus traveling north on U.S. 150. Christie was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Focus was identified as 32-year-old Dalton Smith of Georgetown, Indiana. Authorities initially said formal charges were expected as investigators continued examining the circumstances of the collision.
The investigation subsequently resulted in criminal charges against Smith. According to court reporting, he faces allegations including reckless homicide, criminal recklessness, dealing methamphetamine and possession of a firearm by a felon. A judge set his bond at $1 million cash, and Smith pleaded not guilty.
Court documents cited by local news outlets allege that Smith was traveling at a high rate of speed and drove around stopped traffic before entering the intersection. Investigators also reported finding firearms in his vehicle and methamphetamine during a search at the Floyd County Jail. These allegations remain matters for the court to determine.
The case has drawn additional attention because Smith was reportedly on parole following a previous fatal DUI crash. In 2016, he pleaded guilty in connection with a crash that killed an infant, for which he served a prison sentence before being released.
For Julia Christie’s family and friends, however, the focus remains on the young woman whose life ended unexpectedly. At only 23 years old, Julia’s death has left loved ones facing a sudden and painful loss while investigators and prosecutors work through the circumstances surrounding the crash.
